Liverpool believe their bid to sign Real Madrid star James Rodriguez is back on – if they make the Champions League.

The Reds have been chasing the Colombian attacking midfielder for some time but have been consistently knocked back. Suddenly, though, the situation in Spain has changed.

The 25-year-old appears to have fallen out of favour with coach Zinedine Zidane and is now actively looking for a move amid reports he has been offered to Chelsea as part of a move to sign Eden Hazard.

That deal is highly unlikely as Chelsea have no interest in selling. But the news has reignited Liverpool’s desire to swoop for a player who was one of the stars of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

A source close to Real Madrid said: “It seems Zidane is not satisfied with the player this season and has already asked for reinforcements in this position for next season.

"The player isn’t happy and it now appears a move in the summer is very feasible.”

Rodriguez has a contract until the end of June 2020 and is likely to be valued at €75million, or £65million.

Liverpool are not the only club interested but appear to be leading the race - and reports in Spain suggest contact has already been made with the player’s agent.

However the Anfield club has been told Rodriguez will only leave Real for a club that is playing Champions League football next season.
