Adam Lallana is set to miss a reunion with Southampton on Saturday after being injured during England's draw with Spain.

The Liverpool midfielder, who had scored a penalty and was threatening to become England's dominant influence, was taken off after 26 minutes having aggravated a groin problem that first flared up during a 2-1 win at Swansea on October 1.

Lallana could not train for 12 days after that injury and missed England's World Cup qualifiers but it is understood the damage he has sustained this time is not so serious and he should be able to start training at some point next week.

But his absence at St Mary's will still be a significant blow for Jurgen Klopp, who regards Lallana as one of the most important members of his team and has been instrumental in them climbing to the top of the table.

Lallana was assessed by Liverpool's medical staff on Wednesday, having returned to Merseyside in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It is expected that his place will now be taken by Gini Wijnaldum.
