Emre Can's late withdrawal during Liverpool's 4-3 win over Manchester City was due to the midfielder suffering from illness, Jürgen Klopp has revealed.

The German was replaced by James Milner 11 minutes from the end of normal time, despite having acquitted himself well alongside Gini Wijnaldum up until that point.

But, speaking after the game, Klopp explained that both Can and teammate Mohamed Salah had been feeling unwell in the build-up to Sunday's fixture - and it was for that reason that the former was forced off.

"Before the game, Emre and Mo [were] on the way to becoming ill and obviously with Emre it was a little bit more difficult," he told reporters.

"[At] half-time [it] was already difficult but we have not a lot of options so he tried everything.

"Usually, 4-1 is a good moment [to make a substitution] but against City maybe it's difficult!"
