With Liverpool drawn against FC Porto in the last 16 of the Champions League, we take a more in-depth look at the Portuguese giants.

Champions League pedigree

Porto were among the last teams to book their place in Monday's draw, beating Monaco 5-2 in their final game in Group G to finish second behind leaders Besiktas.

However, the Portuguese side have a long association with the Champions League, having won it twice during their 32 seasons in the competition.

Their most recent triumph came under manager Jose Mourinho in 2004, when goals from Deco, Carlos Alberto and Dmitri Alenichev secured a 3-0 win over Didier Deschamps' Monaco in Gelsenkirchen.

They memorably beat English side Manchester United 3-2 on aggregate en route to the final, with Mourinho racing off down the touchline in celebration.

Porto's previous victory came back in 1987, when they beat Bayern Munich 2-1 to become Portugal's first European Cup winners since Benfica in 1962.

In more recent years, the club have struggled to reach the latter stages of the competition and bowed out in the round of 16 last season following defeat to eventual finalists Juventus.

Since winning the Europa League in 2011, the club have gone out of the Champions League in the group stage on three occasions, with a quarter-final appearance in 2014-15 representing their peak performance during that time.

The manager

Current boss Sergio Conceicao, 43, took control in June this year after predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo, now at English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, failed to deliver a trophy in his one season in charge of Portugal's second most successful club.

Conceicao, a hugely successful winger during his playing days with Porto and Lazio, currently has the 27-time league title winners back on top of the Primeira Liga and in contention to win their first championship since 2013.

The former Nantes boss has implemented a flexible 4-4-2 system at the Estádio do Dragão, based around the high-pressing of wingers Yacine Brahimi and Jesus Corona, plus strike duo Vincent Aboubakar and Moussa Marega.

While his attack-minded formation has served him well domestically, in Europe, Conceicao has often opted for a more defensive 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 set-up.

Just seven years into his managerial career, the former Olhanense, Academica and Vitoria Guimaraes coach is yet to win any silverware but did lead Braga to the final of the Portuguese Cup in 2015, only to lose on penalties to Sporting CP.

Star player

African Footballer of the Year-nominated trio Brahimi, Marega and Aboubakar are the headline acts of Conceicao's Porto.

Algeria winger Brahimi pulls the strings coming in from the left flank, with Mali international Marega and Cameroon striker Aboubakar applying the finishing touches.

The latter of the three is Porto's top scorer in both the Primeira Liga and Champions League this season and it's hard to look past Aboubakar as the biggest threat to Liverpool.

With 12 goals domestically and level with Philippe Coutinho's five in Europe, the 6ft forward might not be the most technically gifted player but he has a knack of putting the ball in the net.

He scored a brace in both Champions League group-stage matches against Monaco to help secure a place in Monday's last-16 draw and scored a hat-trick against Vitoria Setubal at the weekend to put his club back on top of the Portuguese league.

After a relatively slow start following his move from Lorient to Porto in 2014, he returned from last season's loan at Besiktas to score 20 goals in 22 matches across all competitions so far this term.

Previous meetings

Liverpool are unbeaten in four previous meetings with Porto.

In the most recent encounter, during the 2007-08 Champions League group stages, a Fernando Torres brace helped the Reds secure a 4-1 victory at Anfield.

Dirk Kuyt's 17th-minute strike at the Estádio do Dragão had earned Rafa Benitez's side a 1-1 away draw at Porto earlier in the competition.

The two sides also faced off during Liverpool's run to UEFA Cup success in 2001. Gerrard Houllier's Reds drew 0-0 away and won 2-0 at home to eliminate Porto in the quarter-finals.
